Stanley Harbour with ships at fipass

STANLEY HARBOUR

Stanley harbour is on the east coast of north-east East Falklands. It is a large inlet entered by “the Narrows” from Port William, a deep outer harbour.
Stanley sprawls along the south shore of the harbour, sheltered by the slope of Stanley Common. The harbour is very busy with cruise liners, fishing vessels, freighters and Navy vessels.
Some of the beaches around the harbour were mined during the Argentine occupation in 1982 and areas remain marked mine-fields.
In the past, particularly between 1850 and 1890 the harbour became a graveyard of shipwrecks and condemned hulks as sailing ships rounded Cape Horn and if in trouble had no alternative but to struggle to the Falklands for repairs.
